Condition Surveys to assess a window's overall condition and determine the factors that have contributed to the deterioration of its lead, glass, and painted images. A hand on access to the stained glass is vital for a successful survey and even at this early stage in the restoration process erecting scaffolding is a good investment. We prefer to examine each window in daylight and at night. Each lighting condition reveals different information about problems and their causes. The environment that surrounds a window is equally important. Poorly installed protective glazing systems, a buildings interior climate and seasonal changes all impact stained glass and their effects need to be thoroughly investigated and addressed in the survey. The window's frame is also examined and its needs are addressed in the condition report. A stained glass window's frame is an important element its structure and its restoration goes hand in hand with the restoration of the stained glass. The condition survey would produce a Priority Assessment. |
