Since its founding, the studio has developed the only formal stained glass apprenticeship training program in the country and has helped cultivate the next generation of conservators of this unique artform. The Studio is equipped to offer a comprehensive course of study on each facet of stained glass conservation.
Potential students are required to go through a selective application process. Apprentices are chosen on the basis of interest, previous experience, education, hand skills, patience and their prospects for successful completion of the program.
The apprenticeship program consists of an intensive, three-year residency at the Studio. Working closely and constantly with the Studio's master conservator, apprentices learn not only the necessary technical skills, but also the creative vision and historical understanding that distinguish the well-rounded stained glass craftsperson. The program incorporates all aspects of the craft, from the history of art and architecture to conservation science and museum conservation approaches. It emphasizes an important balance between academic study and practical experience.
Apprentices develop a thorough understanding of the design and structure of windows and the conditions that cause them to deteriorate. They come to possess sensitivity to the many challenges they will face in their careers as master conservators and a true sense of the ethics that will guide their career. |
